Overview

The Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation, issued by The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), is the only globally recognised certification for internal auditors. It validates the knowledge and skills needed to plan, conduct, and report internal audits in line with the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF).

This program prepares candidates for the three-part CIA examination, developing competence in audit fundamentals, engagement practice, and the business knowledge an effective internal auditor requires, including governance, risk management, financial management, and information security.

Part 1: Essentials of Internal Auditing

• Fundamentals of internal auditing and the International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF)
• Internal audit standards, independence and objectivity
• Governance principles and the role of internal audit
• Risk management fundamentals and control concepts
• The roles of internal audit in organizational governance

Part 2: Practice of Internal Auditing

• Managing the internal audit activity: planning and resource allocation
• Coordinating with external auditors and other assurance providers
• Executing audit engagements, programs, testing and documentation of audit work
• Communicating results and monitoring engagement outcomes

Part 3: Business Knowledge for Internal Auditing

• Business acumen: business processes and risk exposure
• Financial management and accounting concepts
• Information technology, business continuity and information security frameworks
• Regulatory compliance and fraud risks

CIA Exam Registration & Certification

The CIA exam consists of three computer-based parts. Candidates apply and manage their qualification through the IIA's Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS), and schedule exam appointments at Pearson VUE test centres.

Candidates have three years from acceptance of their eligibility to complete all three parts. CIA exam results are typically released about three weeks after the exam date. A valid CIA program authorization is also available for candidates who do not yet meet the work-experience or education requirements.

1. Create your profile in the IIA CCMS and submit the CIA application with any required fees.
2. Have your education, character reference and work-experience eligibility confirmed.
3. Register for Parts 1, 2 and 3 and receive your authorization to test.
4. Schedule and pass each part at a Pearson VUE centre within the three-year window.
5. Pass all three parts to receive the CIA designation from The IIA.
